Spotlight on a Visionary Leader: Tarja Halonen, Former President of Finland.
We’re honored to spotlight a luminary of leadership and advocacy, Tarja Halonen, who served with distinction as the 11th President of the Republic of Finland from 2000-2012 and made history as the nation’s first female head of state.
A committed champion for human rights, democracy, and the strength of civil society, President Halonen has been a pivotal figure in promoting progressive policies and fostering sustainable development.
During her Presidency, she served as co-chair of the United Nations Millennium Summit and co-chair of the UN High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability and co-chair of World Commission on the Social Dimension of Globalization, appointed by International Labour Organization ILO. Her commitment is underlined by the creation of the TH Global Sustainable Foundation, ensuring the continuation of her impactful work beyond her presidency.
With a profound connection to the Settlement Movement, President Halonen’s work has been deeply entwined with the Finnish Federation of Settlement Houses. Her leadership as a former chairman and current honorary chairperson demonstrates her enduring dedication to advocating for equality and social justice.
As a member of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s Leadership Council, her vision for a better world continues to inspire and drive meaningful action.
She also continues to work closely with the UN, and is currently member of the Secretary-General’s High-Level Advisory Board on Mediation, UN Global Champion for Disaster Risk Reduction and UN Land Ambassador as well as a member of CTBTO Group of Eminent Persons.
