IFS Celebrates Historic Voter Turnout and Democratic Renewal in Hungary

The International Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers (IFS) celebrates the record-breaking voter turnout in Hungary’s recent election, which marked a pivotal shift in the nation’s leadership. With 77.8% of eligible voters participating, this election represents the highest turnout in Hungarian history and a resounding call for democratic renewal.

The election results bring a new government under the leadership of Péter Magyar and the Tisza Party, ending 16 years of nationalist rule. This new leadership has pledged to restore democratic institutions, including a free press and an independent judiciary, confront corruption, rebuild social welfare systems, and champion human rights for marginalized communities, including LGBTQIA+ and Roma populations.

IFS has long partnered with Hungarian community organizations and neighborhood centers, witnessing their resilience and dedication to inclusive urban and rural organizing. These efforts have persisted despite challenges such as corruption, censorship, and the rise of authoritarianism.

We are in awe of the millions of tiny, repeated moments of strategy, courage and encouragement that had to happen over many years to lead to this massive voter turnout and peaceful transfer of power. The courage and strategic persistence of these communities have culminated in this historic moment of democratic engagement and peaceful transition of power.

As many countries where IFS member organizations operate face similar challenges from far-right and authoritarian dynamics, we draw inspiration from the example set by Hungarian community organizers. Their work underscores the power of grassroots efforts in fostering democratic change.

With gratitude, celebration, and hope,

The Board of the International Federation of Settlements and Neighborhood Centers
