Reducing inequalities through community-based empowerment : NGO Committee on Human Rights Meeting in New York

Dr Bobbi Nassar, IFS representative at the United Nations and Co-Chair of the NGO Committee on Human Rights met with some of the IFS member organisations and other NGO’s representatives to discuss coalition building that amplifies the work of CBOs. Within the SDG system one type of coalition is that of the NGO Major Groups. The meeting took place on November 8, 2019, in New York, USA.

The panel also talked about Potential opportunities within the UN system will also be explored including the Commission on Social Development and the Commission on the Status of Women. Connections within the United Nation’s Human Rights System will be defined including the Universal Periodic Review.

Two community-based organizations will describe operating place-based and community-informed programs that respond to the needs of their local community. These programs have a track record of launching initiatives that combat poverty and inequality. (SDG number 1 and number 10). They are also involved in advocacy on the local, state, and federal level.
